Speaking Tests

Today started the first day of a week and a half worth of speaking tests to be carried out at my school.  They will be given to every English student (~350) and done by one moderator.  Me!

It's really rather easy.  While the rest of the class enjoys a movie (today it was Alice in Wonderland), one student comes over to my little station in the back of the room and gets asked three questions:

  • How are you?

  • Are you ready?

  • and one question related to the material we have studied in the first term.

Scoring is based from 1-3:

  • 1 - They don't know what I asked them and don't know how to answer

  • 2 - They know what I asked them, but didn't answer completely correct

  • 3 - "I got this be-otch, English is my second language"

Easy enough.

The 6th graders were tested today.  For the most part, the majority of the students received 3's, but a few 2's and even some 1's were given.

Despite receiving "low" marks, the 1's and 2's did give some excellent answers!!  Here's a little sampling of some of the finer English I heard today!

Student A:

Me:  Hi!  How are you?

Student A:  I'm fine.

Me:  Are you ready?

Student A:  I'm 13 years old.

Me:  Great! (?!?) First question...

Student B:

Me:  Where is the music classroom.

Student B:  At school.

Me:  Yes, yes it is.  (hahahaha genius!)

Student C:

Me:  What do you want to be in the future?

Student C:  . . .

Me:  Ok.  Where is your math classroom?

Student C:  . . .

Me:  Ok.  How's the weather?

Student C:  It's Tuesday.

Me: That's... true.  Ok you're done!  Good job!

Student D:

Me:  Hi!  How are you?

Student D:  How are you?

Me:  (??)  Are you ready?

Student D:  Are you ready?

Me:  (???):  How's the weather?

Student D:  How's the weather?

Me:  Ok, great job.  You're done!

^This one was a "special" student

Oh the awesomeness that is teaching ESL!! ^^

But as I said most students got 3's, so either I'm doing my job!! or the materials we're covering aren't challenging enough.  All in favor of the first?! ^^
