Wednesday (7/3) I arrived at school slightly panicked that I had less than a clue as to what I was going to do with my 5th graders. Waygook was down, it was the day for before the finale exam and doing another review lesson seemed as appealing as shooting myself in the foot.
But then I remembered!! Speaking tests!! Saved!! Put on another Johnny Depp movie (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) and settle in for round #2.
The process was the same: class watches a movie, students come over one-by-one, I ask my questions.
- How are you?
- Are you ready?
- and one question related to the material we have studied in the first term - 5th graders were asked what time they did X, Y, or Z. ("What time do you ___?")
Scoring was based from 1-3:
- 1 - They only answered by saying a time
- 2 - They answered, but didn't answer completely correct (ie left out a word or mixed up the activity asked about)
- 3 - and as before - "I got this be-otch, English is my second language"
Some 3's were given again, but the majority of students got 2's. I think being that they are a bit younger, they were just nervous and forgot the importance of a complete sentence. They still understood and that really is the most important part! I did give out a lot of 1's as well, and even (sadly) some 0's.
Here's another sampling of some of the better answers I heard!
Student A:
Me: What time do you study English?
Student A: (throws head back in laughter) 10:30!
Me: Ok!
Student B:
Me: What time do you eat breakfast?
Student B: I'm 7 o'clock...
Me: What time... do you eat... breakfast?
Student B: I'm eat...
Me: Ok, good job.
Student C:
Me: What time do you study math?
Student C: Math? Umm... I don't know why we study math, but I know we have to and we will study math today.
Me: Oh! Ok, great! You're done!
^he's a high level student, so perhaps I just misspoke
Student D:
Me: Hi! How are you?
Student D: . . .
Me: How... are... you?
Student D: . . .
Me: How. Are. You? (pointing to them)
Student D: . . .
Me: Ok, go away.
He almost had it! @.@
haha Great post! It made me laugh.
