-er

Taller, faster, stronger, bigger, -er, -er, -er…

My 6th graders are currently learning the art of comparing two things*.  Which they seem to understand, but only choose to answer by shouting out one word answers.  :-/  English fail.

So in order to make things a bit more lively, a bit more fun (comparing pencils and book bags can only take you so far) I planned for a Class Olympics today!

After a short review - two pages of stimulating textbook work - I explained how the Olympics would work, was greeted with happy smiles and eager head nods from my students; we headed outside to get the games started!

We compared:

 height - taller

 speed - faster

 strength - stronger

size - bigger

Besides the craziness that ensued, it was a highly successful day!

*We tried to compare 3 things, but they couldn't quite pick up the difference between -er and -est.  So we decided to not push our luck.  Test scores are what matter here anyways @.@
